Contravening a Traffic Sign
Traffic sign laws cover disobeying road signs including traffic lights.
There are two basic ways you can contest a traffic sign allegation;
- Demonstrate that you didn’t contravene the sign
- Demonstrate that the sign didn’t conform to current road sign regulations
Additionally, if you were in a situation where for example you disobeyed the road sign in order to move out of the way of an emergency vehicle then you can use a special reasons argument to avoid points on your licence.
Disobeying traffic signs have the TS20, 30, 40, 50, 60 & 70 driving offence codes.
Being found guilty of contravening traffic signs carries 3 penalty points on your driving licence and a fine of up to £1000.
Traffic Signs & Markings
The legislation for traffic signs also covers road markings, including white lines, chevrons, yellow boxes etc.
Each of these lines is required to comply with strict regulations with regard to width, dimensions and spacing. If they don’t comply then you will have a potential defence against the allegations.
This legislation can be quite complex, so if you have an doubts about the validity of your possible defence, seek expert advice from experienced legal road traffic law solicitors. Running red lights has got to be the most serious sign offences? It’s also becoming increasingly common
Running red lights is oh so dangerous and needs to be clamped down on.
Cameras on traffic lights is the only solution surely?
It’s all well and good adding more cameras, but they need to be highly visible to act a s a deterrent.
There seem to be more cameras on more and more traffic lights, especially on those stupid roundabouts that now seem to need traffic lights as well for todays drivers to be able to negotiate successfully!
Jumping red lights is a relatively minor offence in the grand scheme of things. There are much worse offences being committed on a much larger scale.
If the fine was big enough and cameras were highly visible it would be a much fairer process. People crossing lights just as they turn to amber getting snapped by semi hidden cameras is just more revenue raising isn’t it?
The law is the same for everyone & some drivers never get fined for speeding, running red lights, etc…… there must be a reason for that?
Many drivers never get caught using their mobiles while driving, never get caught driving while drunk, or for failing to report an accident…… maybe it’s because they are law abiding citizens??
People talk like they should be allowed to drive dangerously. The laws are there to keep everyone as safe as possible…… stop moaning
I have a clean licence because I obey the law……. try it for a while…..
All the moaners make it sound like the law is wrong and they haven’t done anything to deserve punishment…. previous comments are spot on….. you don’t have to get caught breaking the law…… you could not break the law instead?
